Troop 199 – Bettendorf, Iowa

Chartered by Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church

(updated 14 Feb 2017)

Who we are: Troop 199 was started in the late 1950’s. Our current BSA Charter began in 1997. The troop’s current membership stands at 15 boys in grades 6-12, and 8 registered Adult Leaders. Our Troop has produced 30 Eagle Scouts since 1961. Membership in Boy Scouting is open to any boy who has completed fifth grade and is at least 10 years old. The maximum age is 18 years old. We have students from Davenport, Bettendorf and Pleasant Valley public schools, Lourdes Catholic School and Assumption High School. New members are welcome at any time.

What we do: Troop 199 meets weekly on Monday night at 7:00 pm at Lourdes Catholic School in the 8th-grade classroom during the school year. In summer months, we meet at the Middle Park Lagoon in Bettendorf. During our meetings, we promote working on rank advancement and merit badges. 9 of our adults are Merit Badge Counselors.

Elections are held every 6 months for Scout Leadership positions such as Senior Patrol Leader, Asst. Senior Patrol Leader, Troop Guide, and Patrol Leaders. Other positions (Librarian, Scribe, Chaplain’s Aide, etc.) are appointed by the newly elected Scouts. All scouts are encouraged to seek leadership positions. Higher Scout Ranks require leadership.

Troop 199 is involved in many activities during and outside of their regular meeting time. We typically have an overnight campout each month, except for June and December. Our campouts are usually at county and state parks, and occasionally at a Scout Reservation. At our campouts, we work on outdoor skills and merit badge requirements. All scouts are expected to participate in camp duties (pitching tents, gathering firewood, preparing food, cooking, & cleanup). We enjoy having Webelos II and their parents join us on these campouts.

The troop has traveled to summer camps in Illinois, South Dakota, Indiana and Wisconsin in recent years. They have also volunteered at the Quad City Air Show and Armed Forces Day celebrations.  Troop 199’s ongoing service project is the clean-up, maintenance and improvement of Nowlan Cemetery in Princeton (IA) Township.
